Jenny Overalls

The Jenny Overalls are a modern twist on vintage work wear.  The pattern also features pants or shorts with wide legs and high waist without the overall bib.  The pattern comes with wide side seams to make fitting these pants much easier.  This class will be held over three sessions.  We'll start by constructing the bib and taking measurements to select the proper size.  Students will then cut out and prep their fabric before the next session in which we will construct the trousers and refine the fit.  In the final session, we'll finish construction and work on finishing touches such as adding the buttons and overall buckles.

  • Jenny Overall pattern from Closet Case Pattern Company (pattern sized for 33" hip to 48" hip)
  • Bottom-weight fabric (check the pattern for yardage for your size).  Example fabrics are:  denim, twill, medium weight canvas, gabardine, medium weight linen.  If you choose denim or twill, wash and dry your fabric at least twice before class as these fabrics shrink greatly.
  • You'll need about 1/2 yard of lightweight cotton fabric (you can use muslin) for the front pockets if you choose to use them.
  • Lightweight fusible interfacing such as Pellon Shape Flex woven interfacing (SF101)
  • One 9" standard nylon coil dress zipper (not metal, not invisible)
  • One Jenny Overalls buckles kit or 3 5/8" buttons
  • Your sewing machine (if you want to use a shop machine, please reserve it in advance)
  • Scissors and rotary cutter (if desired)
  • Fabric marking tool (chalk, disappearing pen, etc)
  • Matching thread

Skill Level: Intermediate
Requirements: You must have mastery of your machine and have prior experience sewing garments in the past.
