Fair Play Girls T-Shirt / Tank / Dress



A great first garment for a beginner sewist, this garment sews up quickly.  Optional short sleeves and side seam pocket.  Youth Sizes 2-10.


This 3 hour class teaches the pattern use skills of size selection & fit, lay out and cutting, reading and following written pattern instructions, pressing, seaming, edge finishing and matching stitch choice with fabric (woven/knit/specialty). 


Supplies Needed:

Elementary Dress Pattern by Fair Play

Fabric: 
Dress: 45" fabric - 1.25-1.5 yds.  
T-Shirt: 45" fabric - .75-1 yd
Tank Dress: 45" fabric- 1-1.25 yds.
Tank Top: 45" fabric- .75-1 yd

*For 36" fabric, directional fabric, or fabric with a nap, increase yardage by 1/4 yd.
For directional fabric consider what direction you want the pattern to lay - pattern pieces will be cut with grain of fabric running vertically, parallel to the selvage (edge) of the fabric.
Pre-wash all fabrics except dry clean only material. Wash warm or cold, tumble or line dry, as you will wash the garment.

Notions: One button,  5/8" or smaller, choice of thread- one spool, one hand sewing needle for button attachment only.  

Sewing Machine:  Use your sewing machine or ours.  (If using ours please call the shop to reserve a machine). Please be sure your machine is in good working order and known to you.  If you'd like to get to know your machine better we recommend our Machine Basics 1: Introduction, taught monthly (can also be taken as a private lesson).

Skills Learned:

- Size selection and fit
- Seaming: simple and French
- Finishing raw edges of pattern pieces to prevent ravelling edges.
- Layout and cutting
- General sewing techniques
- Facings for neck and arm hole openings and simple straight machine hems.
- Pressing seams and facing folds
- Attaching and easing in sleeves
- Reading and interpreting written pattern instructions
- Sewing button onto garment.

Requirements: Students should have completed Machine Basics 1: Introduction, or hve equivalent skills. Equivalent skills are: knowing how to thread your sewing machine, wind a bobbin and replace it and sew a seam. Confidence in sewing machine operation required.
