Skill Builders 2:  Knits

2 hrs - small project - machine sewing skills

Level:  Beginner
Pre-Requisite:  Basic sewing machine use skills or our Machine Basics 1:  Sewing Machine Use class.
Instructors:  Susan O'Dell & Carol Zamonski

This 2 hour class introduces students to sewing knit fabrics on a home sewing machine. Students make a small knitted bag to practice skills learned.   All fabric supplies pre-cut and included in class fee.  Use your own sewing machine or ours (please call ahead of time to reserve a machine if using ours).

Knit fabrics are widely varied in their construction, stretch, fiber compositionand uses.  This class teaches these aspects of knits and teaches cutting and sewing techniques.  Handouts with web links provided (paper and electronic) for review and further learning on these topics.

Skills Learned:

Fabric Education:  see, touch, stretch and discuss various knit fabrics
- Machine Stitches: Learn to use your home sewing machine to sew knits
- Presser Feet: Test different presser feet on various knit fabrics to understand their benefit in sewing knit fabrics
- Types of Stretch:  % stretch, two way vs 4 way stretch fabrics, etc.
- Sewing Pattern Instructions for Knits: Quick survey and handout mentioning special techniques or instructions commonly found in sewing patterns using knit fabrics.  Apply some of these in sewing the small project completed in class.
- Interfacing: Supporting garments and objects made with knit fabrics.
- Button Holes and other Closures: Adapt button hole making for success with knits.  Discuss other closures and hardware for knits.
- Complete a Small Project: Make a small bag using pre-cut kit included in class  fee.



Supplies Needed:

- Sewing Machine:
Bring your own or use ours.  Please call ahead of time (at least one day) to reserve a machine if using ours.  Limited supply.

- Zig Zag Presser Foot/Button hole Foot:  Sewing machines have various presser feet.  Please be sure to bring a presser foot that accommodates stitches with width, such as a zig zag stitch.  In addition, if your machine uses a button hole foot (check your manual for this detail) please bring it with you.  Replacement presser feet can be purchased on the internet.  Double check that they will fit your machine before buying.  They are usually not expensive.  

Optional Supplies:

- Walking Foot: 
 Quilters often have one.  This foot can help knitted fabrics from traveling outside the path of sewing while trying to sew them.  

- Sewing Notions: Thread, pins, stitch ripper, etc.
