Immortalize a place close to you heart with a map quilt! In this three-part workshop, each student will choose a map of personal significance for their quilt, learn image transfer and pattern making strategies, and create a small quilted wall hanging. Techniques taught will include machine and hand applique, machine and hand quilting, and binding.
No previous sewing experience necessary – students can work either on machines or by hand, depending on what they feel most comfortable with. Students must bring a printout of their map, fabric, thread, and a sewing machine (if they want to use one). Image transfer and pattern making materials and tools will be provided, and additional supplies will be available for purchase.
Class will be held in three 2-hour sessions:
First Class: Intro to map quilts. Students fine-tune their patterns, learn image transfer and pattern making strategies (including carbon transfer paper, freezer paper, wonder under, and freehand drawing), and begin transferring their patterns onto their base fabric.
Second Class: Demos on machine applique, needle turn applique, hand quilting, embroidery, and machine quilting.
Third Class: Individual work/trouble shooting, binding demo, discussion of display options (matting/framing vs quilt sleeve etc).
